I was born (1934) in the tenement which still stands across Helen Street from the White City and I was immediately captured by the advent of "Speedway" after WWII

Eric Chitty
I can remember Eric Chitty singing a tribute for someone who was missing as the result of injuries. The tribute was new to me but it turned out to be an old Cowboy song, "Empty Saddles in the Old Corral".

Gruff Garland
Gruffy was amzingly different from the rest because he was a "leg-trailer" as was Oliver Hart. Very dramatic taking the bends good and wide at full bore.

Maurice Stobbart
Maurice wasn't very good but was well liked anyhow with his leathers billowing out in the breeze. Made him look twice the size of the rest.

Will Lowther/Joe Crowther
Lowther and Crowther were among the first of regular Tigers, like Junior Bainbridge, Eddie Lack and later the wee wizard who was Tommy Miller. Before those guys, Johnston, Kitchen, Chitty and the Hodgson brothers, Frank and Jack seemed to tour the circuit of all of the tracks with no particular allegiance to any team.
