Forty years ago Peter Collins' career reached its pinnacle when he won the world title in Katowice. To mark the anniversary of this fine achievement a new DVD box-set has been released by Retro Speedway.
The campaign to Save Oxford Stadium continues. Their latest newspaper advert features a classic encounter between two legends.
The Eleventh California-in-England Reunion
Friends of Speedway are pleased to announce the date of the above reunion to be held on 9th October 2016 (11am-4pm) at the Country Park, Nine Mile Ride, Wokingham, Berks, where the speedway took place all those years ago. Everyone is welcome to attend and please bring any memorabilia that you might still have. It doesn't have to be connected with this venue but a bonus if it is. "As a Newcastle Diamonds fan I remember Mark well. He was really struggling to begin with although there were glimpses of his talent. I remember him becoming a heat leader was literally from one race to another. Ivan Mauger was making one of his visits to Brough Park and Mark was struggling again with (I think) two last places to his name. I don't know what advice Ivan gave him that night but he won his last two races and from that point was an 8+ man. His last heat pairing with David Bargh won Newcastle many matches and even a trophy or two. I always had the impression that Mark didn't believe enough in himself. If had had a little more self confidence he may have gone further in the sport."
"I went to the long track final in Germany too with the barmy army!!!!! OMG! How long ago now? We were just teenagers then following MK up and down the country! Myself, Colin, Paul, Lee (No longer with us RIP)."
"Just looking at Cliftonhills pictures there, I was over at the stadiun in January and I was suprised to see the speedway track is no longer there. There are small stands behind both goals and you cannot see the big bends now. The home straight is half the width and there's no fence on the home straight. And there's me thinking that we might get the Coatbridge Monarchs or Tigers back some day."
