Egon's Dark Clouds
By Tracy Holmes

Egon Muller

Egon Muller. I really don't know much about Egon, apart from the obvious. Speedway Longtrack legend. Which is the opening line to one of the most mind-blowing stories that sport has ever known. Grasstrack Wizard. Speedway 'Super-Star' who could mix it with the very best at the highest level for over a decade. Mechanical and tuning genius.

His 1983 World Final win was all first class. Okay, never mind the 'elephant in the room', he still had to ride the best Speedway he'd ever had to and he did. The maximum score being the cherry-on-top.

Longevity;

1974 World Longtrack Final, 1st.

1984 World Longtrack Final, 2nd.

1994 World Longtrack Final, 4th. On the same points as the 3rd placed Gerd Riss.

I don't know much about his career as an entertainer/singer/performer but I recently learned that on his tour of New Zealand and Australia, mid 70s with the Mauger/Briggs circus, he was able to earn extra dollars with his act. A hugely popular character on and off the track.

Not long ago, he posted on his facebook page, something that shocked me into reality with regards to human frailty and how it affects all of us as times winged chariot takes it toll. Went like this;

"I often amaze myself and am always surprised when I see such reports. And then these lovely comments. But the price I paid for so little wealth with my health was very high. Thank you, at least you understood what my goals and wishes were at the time. But how is it supposed to go on now please? The clouds above us are getting darker."

WOW!!! Yes, that was the translation and maybees there may be something lost BUT, even through the smoke & mirrors of social media, you can hear the anguish and feel the pain. How many of us see the same clouds?

I hope Egon can face the future with all the bravery he was able to muster during his days as a 'Track Colossus' and I'm sure I speak for us all, wishing him all the best.
